First it was Erling Haaland and his non-Premier League club exit clause, only to be followed a few days later by Kylian Mbappe and his own departure clause.

This week’s news has almost made it seem as though the two modern giants are looking for one another, much like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi did for so many years in their rivalry.

Haaland‘s 2022/23 performances are far outweighing Mbappe‘s so far, and only Vinicius Junior joins them in the conversation around footballers who are expected to dominate for years to come.

It’s obvious that Real Madrid will again come forward for Haaland, and for two years already both the Norwegian’s name and Mbappe‘s have been linked with a possible move to the Spanish capital. One has a release clause set in his contract, while the other knows he made a big mistake in turning down Los Blancos in order to sign a new contract in May.

Has Real Madrid‘s position changed in recent weeks? No, not on anything. Real Madrid have had their plans in place for a long time now, and for now they are not interested in signing either of the two superstar forwards.

As far as the Frenchman is concerned, forgetting his behaviour and two rejections of Los Blancos, his huge salary is an obstacle. He’s paid 150m euros at Paris Saint-Germain, and that is not affordable. At Valdebebas, they’ve turned their backs on Mbappe after his antics in May.

Impact on the locker room

Much has been said about Mbappe and his impact on the locker room, and Florentino Perez considers Real Madrid‘s to be extremely healthy. Mbappe could mess that up, and no risks will be taken.

With Haaland, the only option is to wait until 2024. For now, nobody in the capital is thinking about the forward beyond recognising his freakish achievements this season.

For now, Endrick is the forward they’re hoping to see shine.
