The United States bid farewell to the World Cup with their heads held high. Gregg Berhalter‘s team were outplayed, especially in the first half, by a team with a lot of quality and very clear ideas.
They paid for some serious defensive errors despite playing well and recording higher possession figures, as well as more shots, shots on goal, completed passes and corners than the Dutch, forcing the Netherlands goalkeeper Andries Noppert to make more saves than Matt Turner.
The Dutch counter-attacks
Whenever the USMNT lost possession, the Netherlands looked dangerous on the counter.
Louis van Gaal‘s side patiently waited for their opportunity to make the most of their opponents’ errors and grab a well-earned win.
The Netherlands recorded six shots on target, three of which ended into the back of the net.
Struggling in possession
The USMNT struggled to create danger in front of the Netherlands’ goal.
They were lucky to pull one back, but the Dutch netted a third to put the game to bed with eight minutes to go.
Berhalter said that he had been preparing for this game for a year, and it showed.
He did a good job, but the difference in quality between the two teams could be noticed.
The USMNT‘s dream is over, but they can say that they fought until the end.
