Passing the age of 40 and being active in the NFL seems unthinkable for any player today, except Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.

Injuries and the high demands required to stay in the league would make more than one think that retirement age would be before the fourth decade of life.

Tom Brady: “I’m not a sports machine”

Brady still feels he has plenty of energy and strength to continue playing and leading the Buccaneers.

How does Tom Brady feel about retirement?

“I really don’t know (when I’ll stop playing). You could say it’s year to year. Could this be my last year? Absolutely. Will I change my mind? Absolutely. It’s clear to me that I don’t have five years left. I want to do it my way. I want to give it everything I’ve got and see where I’m at. My body feels great. I’ve had, over the years, a lot of serious injuries, but if things go well and we win, it’ll be great,” Brady said.

In the same interview with The Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports/Peacock, the widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time talked about his 40-day retirement from professional football.

“I made the decision (to retire) at that point and I thought it was the best thing for the team, to let the Bucs know. You need time to plan. And after a few talks with Bruce (Arians), Jason (Licht) and my wife, I felt I could still be competitive and play,” Brady said.

Is family Brady’s top priority?

Family comes first and he knows he has little time left in the NFL. His son, who lives in New York, needs time with him, as do his two other young children, ages 12 and 9. Plus he says he needs more time with his wife, Gisele Bündchen.

“I know. I would have preferred to come out of retirement in July if I wanted to come back to play, but I couldn’t. If I said I wasn’t going to play, they (my family) would have made plans. So I felt there was a lot of pressure to make a quick decision. And finally, I just decided, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ ‘ And once I said that, it was like, ‘Here we go,'” the Bucs QB finished.
