Just two days after the Los Angeles Rams claimed controversial quarterback Baker Mayfield off waivers, the defending Super Bowl LVI champions waited for nothing to use the former Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers player.

Out of nowhere, after a game with no touchdowns or interceptions, Tom Brady’s “spirit” crept for four minutes into the body of Mayfield who threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson for the winning touchdown with 15 seconds to play to snap a six-game losing streak with a 16-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football to open Week 14 of the 2022 NFL season.

Raiders, experts in losing games with big leads

The Raiders lost their fourth game of the season in which they had at some point a lead of at least 13 points, as they had the score 16-3 with less than four minutes to play, very similar to what happened to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints in the last Monday Night Football.

It should be remembered that Mayfield was cut by the Panthers on Monday and the Rams didn’t wait to take him after it was confirmed that Matthew Stafford would not return for the remainder of the season due to injury.

What was Baker Mayfield’s first game with the Rams like?

The first overall pick of the 2018 Draft was not the starting quarterback for head coach Sean McVay‘s team, that honor went to John Wolford, however, after a disastrous first offensive series for the home team, he was benched and Mayfield played the rest of the game.

Mayfield’s performance was not the best statistically, but he did have a great finish, completing 22 of 35 passes for 230 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

In addition to the loss, the Raiders suffered the injury of star running back Josh Jacobs, who had to leave for a moment in the third quarter, but returned shortly after, finishing with 27 carries for 99 yards with a touchdown, the only one for his team.

What’s next for the Rams and Raiders?

With this result, the Rams improved their record to 4-9, still in last place in the NFC West and will return to action next Monday, December 19 to visit the Green Bay Packers, while the Raiders dropped to 5-8 and will return to the field next Sunday, December 18 when they host the New England Patriots.
