Over the course of the 2022 NFL season, Tom Brady is expected to take almost every Wednesday off.
He did so in between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ Week One win over the Dallas Cowboys and their Week Two game against the New Orleans Saints, and should keep doing so.
“Finally, at 45 years old, Tom Brady will receive the veteran treatment this season,” NFL insider Ian Rapoport has reported.
“The Buccaneers quarterback took Wednesday off this past week, with it listed as a rest day.
“Sources informed of the team’s plans say, for the first time in his illustrious career, Brady will receive the same designation every Wednesday of the season.
“At times over the past two years, Brady has taken off some Thursdays during the season. But not every one.”
Why is Tom Brady allowed a rest day every Wednesday?
The situation of Tom Brady is not unusual. Many veterans in the NFL are given more time off, as their bodies naturally require more rest to heal in between games.
Brady has generally refused this option until, but will make the most of it in the 2022 NFL season.
From the Bucs‘ point of view, it’s not necessarily a negative, as backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert can take reps during Wednesday practices.
“I think when you play in the league a certain amount of time and you prepare a certain way, it’s not necessary to practice that guy all the time,” head coach Todd Bowles stated.
“You’re going to practice, but you’re not going to practice all the time. You’ll get a day off here and there because it is a long season.”
Why does Tom Brady want a rest day every Wednesday?
During the off-season, Tom Brady took 11 days off to spend time with family and there were various rumours about the exact reasons for that decision.
It is believed that the quarterback’s wife Gisele Bundchen was not at all happy when he reversed his decision to retire, but at least having every Wednesday off will help Brady to make things right at home.
