The NFL playing future of Travis Kelce has been the subject of speculation and intrigue throughout the 2023 season. Kelce has spoken about the physical toll that his decade-plus in the NFL has taken on him and has admitted that he thinks about retiring “often.” And fans may not want to see or think about it, but the next chapter of Kelce’s life could start sooner than many have anticipated.

A veteran NFL reporter on Sunday claimed that Travis could step away from the Kansas City Chiefs following the conclusion of the season and join older brother Jason in retirement — a development that would produce huge shockwaves for the Chiefs franchise and for the NFL as a whole.

Will Sunday be Travis Kelce’s final game?

Speaking on CBS Sports Radio, longtime sideline reporter Michelle Tafoya said that she thinks Travis Kelce will announce his retirement from football whenever the Chiefs’ season ends — which could be as soon as Sunday night, when Kansas City takes on the Buffalo Bills in a divisonal playoff game.

Tafoya also thinks that the Kelces could become for NBC and its streaming platform Peacock what Manning brothers Eli and Peyton have become for ESPN in recent years. The Kelces have one of the most popular podcasts in the United States, “New Heights,” and Travis‘ visibility has grown since he began dating pop superstar Taylor Swift last year.

Kelce’s production declined in 2023

The younger Kelce turned 34 years old early on in the 2023 season, and perhaps there is a correlation between his age and his declining stats in the regular season.

In 15 games, Kelce caught 93 passes (17 fewer than he snagged in 2022) and finished 16 yards shy of 1,000 receiving yards. This snapped his run of seven consecutive seasons registering at least 1,000 yards, and his five receiving touchdowns were his fewest since the 2019 campaign.

Even still, Kelce was selected to the Pro Bowl for the ninth consecutive season, and he remains in with a chance to win his third Super Bowl in 11 NFL seasons — which would further bolster a Hall of Fame-worthy reputation as one of the best tight ends of his generation.
