Trevor Noah has been a fan of the World Cup since he was young and being a South African supporter he had to choose a different team now that his country’s team didn’t even make it to the knockout stage.
He chooses Ghana
During the Daily Show, he addressed Ghana’s win over South Korea, and the audience members were quick to ask him which team he was rooting for.
“Who do I support for this World Cup? Ah, that’s a tough one. Obviously, if South Africa is not in the World Cup, which is most of the time, I immediately switch to Ghana. They are No. 1 for me. I am glad they won the game.”

LGBTQ+ community in the world cup
Meanwhile, he has always criticized Qataris for their banning and disrespect to the LGBTQ+ community and also poked fun at the players that refused to watch the “1 Love” band when FIFA officials sanctioned the players with a yellow card during the game. He mentioned that they did not really support the cause and that they were just joining the bandwagon rather than standing their ground no matter the consequences.
Russia 2018
In the last world cup, he had some criticism about how the French ambassador was mad at him when he said that Africa won the world cup.
“Coming from South Africa [and] watching the World Cup in the United States of America, black people all over the world were celebrating the Africanness of the French players,” he said. “Not in a negative way, but rather in a positive way, going, ‘Look at these Africans who can become French.’ You know what I mean? It’s a celebration of their achievements.”
