Max Verstappen will start Sunday’s Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix from pole position after beating Charles Leclerc to top spot by just 0.021s.

The Ferrari driver was actually ahead by 0.059s after the first runs in Q3, with Red Bull looking much improved after a difficult Friday.

Although Leclerc was able to improve his lap time on his final run, a poor middle sector left the door open for Verstappen to snatch pole with a time of 1:10.342s.

Carlos Sainz crossed the line third just before Sergio Perez spun at the end of his final lap in the second Red Bull. This forced the following Mercedes cars to lift off, meaning Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fourth ahead of Perez and teammate George Russell.

Lando Norris, Mick Schumacher, Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll, who failed to set a lap time in Q3 due to a technical issue, rounded out the top 10.

Q2 was suspended shortly after it had begun after a lit flare was thrown on track at the exit of Turn 12.

The FIA suspended the action until it went out and could be removed, and later confirmed the culprit had been identified and removed from the stands.

Once the action resumed, the Alpine duo of Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon were unable to build on their strong pace in Belgium last weekend, settling for 12th and 13th.

Further down, Daniel Ricciardo‘s miserable campaign continued as he failed to get out of Q1 and will start 17th.
