Tragedy struck the Fury family as Tyson’s cousin, Rico Burton got stabbed to death after the Usyk vs Joshua fight last weekend. The English Heavyweight has been promoting a fight against violence on his social media pages since the murder took place but he still has to keep worrying about his future. When he finished his most recent fight to defend his WBC title, he announced he was retiring from the sport.

However, Usyk’s dominant win against Anthony Joshua has placed him in the spotlight for another potential unification Heavyweight title fight. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman was expecting a response from Fury this week but this recent tragedy made him push the announcement back for one more week.

Fury has until September 2 to saw whether he is truly retiring from boxing or if he wants to defend his title once more before possibly fighting Oleksandr Usyk. In a tweet written by Sulaiman himself, he acknowledged the difficult moment Tyson Fury is going through but told him that the show must go one between the lines.

This is what he wrote: “The WBC is acknowledging the tragedy which happened in the Fury family and in respect of their grief has decided to extend one week until Friday September 2nd the official decision of Tyson Fury regarding his status as heavyweight.”

Will Tyson Fury truly retire from boxing?

Given that he truly has no need for more money or recognition, Tyson Fury can really call it quits as one of the few undefeated champions in boxing history. But Tyson Fury was born to be a boxer, he is still young and in his prime. Defending his title against opponents who haven’t faced him yet is perhaps the only incentive he has left.

Oleksandr Usyk presents as a great opportunity to flex his boxing muscles and see if the Ukrainian champ can actually beat him. There is a massive sizze difference between the two of them, which makes the fight even more interesting. By next Friday, we will know if Usyk is the motivation Fury needs in order to stay in the game.
