It is no secret that the United States practically dominates Mexico in all of the most popular sports on Planet Earth, the only exception that filled those south of the border with pride was soccer, where traditionally, El Tri and Liga MX won the majority of the victories over USMNT and, above all, MLS.
However, that reality has changed completely in recent years, it is not only a warning in some instance, it is in official games, in friendlies, at the national team level, at the club level, in short, everywhere.
The beginning of U.S. dominance over Mexico
Perhaps the beginning of the current hegemony of the United States over Mexico in soccer took place during the Concacaf Nations League, where the team coached by Gregg Berhalter defeated Gerardo “Tata” Martino‘s team 3-2 on June 6, 2021.
That summer also saw the United States win the Gold Cup final by a score of 1-0 and later came a pair of positive results in the Concacaf Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, first a 2-0 victory in Cincinnati and then a 0-0 draw at the Azteca Stadium.
Seattle Sounders, first MLS team to reach the Club World Cup
At the club level there have been many examples of MLS dominance over Liga MX, but undoubtedly the most striking was the one that took place during the Concacaf Champions League final in which for the first time an MLS team will represent the region in the Club World Cup after Seattle Sounders won 5-2 on aggregate over Pumas UNAM on May 4, 2022.
Finally, there are the pair of clashes that MLS and Liga MX have had in the All-Star Game, in 2021, the game ended in a 1-1 draw and the U.S. team won 3-2 in penalty shoot-out and in 2022, MLS won again, this time by a score of 2-1.
Will this be just a stage or is it already a trend that shows the superiority of U.S. soccer over Mexico’s?
