Gregg Berhalter‘s team played well against England and there are several conclusions to be drawn from the 0-0 draw, the main one being that the United States can compete with anyone at this World Cup.

Throughout the match they were superior side, with their big names like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams stepping up to the challenge.

However, positives aren’t everything and, with one game to go, the US have yet to win a match.

It’s also true that they haven’t lost and the two draws means they are currently third in what is the most evenly matched group in the World Cup so far.

The Group B standings after two games

Below is what the standings currently are. Any of the four teams can qualify, though England are the team that has the best chance.

However, it isn’t hard to figure out what they have to do to qualify.

What result puts the USMNT in the next round?

It’s actually quite simple: if they beat Iran on Tuesday, they will go through to the round of 16.

Berhalter‘s team only have to rely on themselves to reach the next round. All they need to do is win.

A draw or a defeat would leave them out, but a win puts them in. It’s as simple as that.

Wales and England will also fight for a place in the round of 16, although the +4 that Gareth Southgate‘s team has in terms of goal difference means that, if they finish level on points, it will be very difficult for them to finish below Wales.

The group is wide open and anything can happen.
