Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is one of the biggest boxing icons on the planet, but even the top stars have their own favourites and the Mexican’s choice might surprise you.

Alvarez, 31, recently lost to Dmitry Bivol but, after that setback, he is fully focused on his next challenge.

The Mexican will make his comeback against Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy fight on September 17.

Many pundits think that Alvarez has modelled his style and career on Floyd Mayweather Jr, but he did not select ‘Money’ as his favourite fighter when asked by Fight Hub TV.

Instead, Canelo went with 27-year-old Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (27-0, 25 KOs), who, incidentally, is with Mayweather Promotions.

“I think Tank is one of my favourites. He’s strong; he’s smart, and he’s very confident. He has a lot of talent,” said Alvarez when asked who his favourite fighter to watch is.

How good is Tank Davis?

Davis boasts an impressive record, but he has many critics, who argue that his management have steered him clear of difficult fights and given him an easy ride which skews and taints his stats.

The attention his handlers have given Tank has protected him from losing to fighters like Lomachenko, Haney and Shakur, but the cost has been high, because it has also stunted his career.
