Despite all the headlines around Kylian Mbappe’s decision to stick with Paris Saint Germain this summer rather than head to Real Madrid, the Ligue 1 champions also need to focus on the coaching position and Ruben Amorim might be their man.

Mauricio Pochettino has had a tumultuous time in charge in Paris and it is widely expected that the Argentine will be leaving the club this summer, despite having a year left on his contract.

In terms of who will replace him, Le Parisien believes that Sporting CP‘s Ruben Amorim is PSG‘s chosen man to take over the reins and finally lead the club to Champions League glory.

He is incoming director Luis Campos‘ priority and the 37-year-old is certainly one of the highest-rated coaches outside of the current elite circle.

Who is Ruben Amorim?

Amorim has been in charge at Sporting CP since 2020 and he delivered the Primeira Liga title in 2021. That was the Lisbon club’s first championship in 19 years and solidified Amorim‘s status as a legend. He won the Primeira Liga Manager of the year award that season.

Bookmakers gave Sporting CP a three percent chance of winning the title, emphasising the quality of Amorim‘s work.

That took them to the Champions League in the 2021/22 season and, against the odds, they recovered from losing the first two group games and made it to the round of 16 with a game to spare, where they eventually fell to Manchester City.

As well as the league title, Amorim has won the Taca da Liga twice with Sporting CP and he also won it in his previous role at Braga.

What makes Ruben Amorim so special?

The Portuguese coach puts faith in young players and has developed the likes of Nuno Mendes (now at PSG), Pedro Goncalves, Pedro Porro and Goncalo Inacio.

As is to be expected, Amorim is largely hailed as the best coach to have come out of Portugal since Jose Mourinho and he prides himself on communication.

Signing Amorim would represent a change of approach for PSG as he is not a coach that found success with a large transfer budget. His best work has come by enhancing the players he has and improving the young stars at the club.
