Ime Udoka has received plenty of unwanted attention this month. He’s been a major talking point after it was revealed that he cheated on Nia Long with a married Mormon woman with three children by the name of Kathleen Nimmo Lynch.

His actions have jeopardized both his personal and professional life. His relationship with Nia Long seems to be far beyond repair and his association with the Boston Celtics has also been severely affected: he’s been suspended by the club for the next year with Joe Mazzulla taking his place as the interim coach.

After his actions came to light, most people expected that the Celtics would be more ruthless in their decision about his future, but they ultimately decided to suspend him for ” breaching the franchise’s code of conduct by having a relationship with a female employee of the organization.”

American sports television personality and journalist Stephen Anthony Smith has since come up with a theory as to why the Celtics didn’t fire Ime altogether and it has something to do to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Theory

“I believe part of the reason he was suspended, but not fired, is because the Boston Celtics did not want him to end up in Brooklyn. I believe that Ime Udoka, had he gotten fired, with all the stuff that happened – remember, the operative words were ‘consensual relationship, violation of organization policy!’ So because it’s that, it’s about your behavior, which we don’t endorse, as opposed to a crime”, explained the presenter on ESPN.

He went on to insist that: “because there was nothing that was put out there that said it was a crime, I believe that if Ime Udoka had been fired by the Boston Celtics, the Brooklyn Nets would’ve fired Steve Nash and brought that brother back and he would be the coach for the Brooklyn Nets right now. That’s how emphatic I feel about this.”

I believe that if Ime Udoka had been fired by the Boston Celtics… he would be the coach for the Brooklyn Nets right now.

Smith did highlight the fact that this is a personal theory and that it’s not based on any kind of inside information. Having said that, the theory is certainly food for thought.
