Questions abound as to how the Phoenix Suns will perform in 2022/23 in the aftermath of owner Robert Sarver‘s suspension.
The 60-year old has been fined 10 million dollars and suspended for one year after an investigation found he used racist and misogynistic language, and bullied employees. He’s since announced he’s in the process of selling the Suns and WNBA team Phoenix Mercury.
Sarver‘s punishment has been met with disapproval, with players, teammates, politicians and sponsors saying it is too lenient.
The first Suns player to speak out was Chris Paul, who said he was “appalled and disappointed” by everything he had read. He also added that the sanction wasn’t enough. The Suns’ other star, Devin Booker, said “that wasn’t the Sarver I knew”. A former franchise great Steve Nash called the situation “terrible”.
The economic loss
From within the organization itself, Suns vice president Jahm Najafi called for Sarver’s resignation, and that his actions were “indefensible”. So far no buyer has stepped up to buy the team, which Forbes values at 1.8 billion dollars.
Booker recently signed a super-max contract that will see him earn 214 million over four years, but the question is whether the drama off the court will affect the team on it.
The Suns have one of the best teams in the NBA as they make a push for the championship. However, with DeAndre Ayton recently admitting he hasn’t spoken to Monty Williams since their elimination in last season’s playoffs, along with Jae Crowder‘s imminent departure, all is not right in Phoenix.
