The draw for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is right around the corner, and 15 of the 32 teams have already qualified for the tournament.

There are a number of things to keep track of when the draw gets underway in just over a week’s time on Friday, April 1.

When is the World Cup 2022 draw?

The draw will take place on Friday, April 1, in Qatar. The event will get underway at 19:00 local time, which is 17:00 in the UK.

FIFA will be streaming the draw live on its official website. Also, the BBC will be broadcasting the draw across their platforms.

Which countries can still qualify?

With regard to UEFA, three more spots are up for grabs through the playoffs. The playoffs will be contested in March, apart from Ukraine vs Scotland, which has been delayed until June.

  • Poland vs Sweden/Czech Republic
  • Portugal/Turkey vs Italy/North Macedonia

Looking at the CONMEBOL qualification table, Ecuador and Uruguay look set to join Brazil and Argentina in Qatar.

Meanwhile, the team that finishes fifth will go into the intercontinental playoffs in the summer for a chance to progress to the World Cup.

Regarding the Asian Football Confederation, South Korea and Iran will be joined by two of Saudi Arabia, Japan and Australia at the tournament.

The nation that misses out will most likely meet UAE or Lebanon for a place in the intercontinental playoffs.

From the Confederation of African Football, five places are up for grabs and each fixture will be contested over two legs.

The Oceania Football Confederation do not get an automatic qualification spot, therefore New Zealand are set to have to rely on the intercontinental playoffs for a place in Qatar.

World Cup 2022 draw format

Once the 32 teams have been confirmed they will be split into four pots, and these pots depend on their FIFA ranking.

Qatar will be placed in Pot 1, alongside the seven highest-ranked teams as per their FIFA rankings.

Countries ranked eighth to 15th will be in Pot 2, 16th to 23rd in Pot 3, and 24th to 28th in Pot 4.

Pot 4 will be completed with the teams from the intercontinental qualifiers, and the UEFA playoffs.

The intercontinental qualifiers will take place on June 13 and 14 in Qatar, in which Africa‘s representatives will take on those of CONMEBOL, while the OFC‘s side will play against the team from Concacaf.

Teams that are from the same confederation will be separated into different groups, apart from UEFA, which can have a maximum of two different sides.
