The World Cup has a goal controversy following Japan’s stunning 2-1 victory over Spain, a result that sees Germany exit the competition in stunning fashion.
It happened in the 51st minute of the match, just minutes after Ritsu Doan had levelled the score for the Asian side.
After a cross from the far side, the ball made its way to the far post where Kaoru Mitoma managed to get his foot on it just before it crossed the byline.
The touch proved decisive, as the ball landed at the feet of Ao Tanaka, who fired past Unai Simon to give Japan the 2-1 lead.
The goal was initially called off by the referee, South African Victor Gomes, but he was immediately called over for a VAR check.
While onlookers expected the decision to stand, the goal was eventually given after several minutes, as it was ruled that the entire ball had not left the field of play.
The ruling proved decisive as it helped Japan win the match and take top spot in Group E, with Spain going through as runners-up.
It means that four-time champions Germany, who defeated Costa Rica 4-2 in the other match, have been eliminated.
