Mac Jones is in serious trouble. Maybe more than Drew Bledsoe went through when he lost the starting job to a certain Tom Brady in 2001. Bledsoe at least was injured, recovered and Bill Belichick never gave him the starting job back.
In the case of Mac Jones, he was also injured, recovered, returned to the starting lineup… but and the gusto lasted barely more than a quarter.
Zappe is greeted as if he were Tom Brady
After Chicago Bears shocked everyone in Foxboro, winning 10-0 over a Bill Belichick who wants to surpass the legendary George Halas in wins, the Pats were not walking. Mac Jones was off-tempo,with 3-for-6 numbers, only 13 yards gained and an interception.
It was the latter that encouraged Belichick to replace him and put rookie sensation Bailey Zappe back on the field. And the gamble transformed the Pats.
Upon entering the field, Zappe received a standing ovation the likes of which has rarely been seen in New England . And ‘Super Zappe’ responded greatly.
With Zappe at control, Pats were a different team
On his first offensive series, Zappe immediately showed what he was made of, with a 30-yard TD pass to Jakobi Meyers. On his second series, he again moved the Pats offense to score again with a 4-yard run by Rhamondre Stevenson to turn the score around and go up 14-10.
What was unprecedented, besides the fan response to Zappe, was that the team seemed to have found the ignition switch, turned it on and became a totally different team.
Up until the first half, Bailey Zappe was 5-for-6, 108 yards, 1 TD and the love of a fan base that seems to have given up on having their first-round pick from a year ago, a struggling Mac Jones, on the gridiron.
