Zion Williamson admits his injury woes have weighed heavily on him as he looks to reestablish himself with the New Orleans Pelicans this season.

The 22-year-old averaged 27 points, 7.2 rebounds on 61 percent shooting in the 2020/21 NBA season, only for his development to be halted by injury.

Williamson missed the entire campaign after recovering from surgery for a broken foot that limited what he could do in rehab, and he opened up about how difficult it was to be away from the game.

“I was in dark places at times because I couldn’t play basketball,” Williamson told Sports Illustrated.

“I could only do limited rehab things. And then just seeing how the world reacted? It took a lot. It did a lot on my spirit.”

Return to action delayed

Williamson looked set to return to action in December, only for tests to show regression in his broken foot, which ruled him out.

“I was rehabbing and in my mind I’m thinking, ‘Man, in two weeks I’m about to play again’. And then I didn’t.” he said.

Now set to return to the court, Williamson is keen to show everyone that he’s a different person and player.

“They’re going to see that I’ve matured off the court and on the court,” said Williamson.

“And they’re also gonna see that my game has evolved.

“I’m gonna show the world things that I’ve had in my arsenal that I didn’t show before.”
