Zion Williamson arrived in the NBA in the 2019 NBA Draft, with the New Orleans Pelicans gambling on a plane that was considered to be a generational talent. At six-foot-seven in height and weighing 285 pounds, Zion is incredibly heavy while not being overly tall in the world of basketball.

He is a physical wonder, and the fourth heaviest player in the NBA. The difference is, most players around his weight are notably taller than he is.

Breaking his right foot was a setback and his recovery hasn’t been easy. Players of his size tend to pile on pounds when out of action, making it harder to return and get back in shape.

But trainer Jasper Bibbs was in charge of monitoring this, and he’s explained the process to the Athletic.

Williamson’s recovery plan

“He’s been phenomenal,” Bibbs said. “I’m happy with his commitment and progress, he’s gotten into a great place mentally and physically.

“Ultimately, we wanted to make him more resilient and a more efficient athlete to allow him to perform at a very high level while staying healthy through the rigours of a full season and post-season.

“This summer we came up with and committed to a plan. We wanted Zion to have a great season, but to also focus on how he could help the team win. We wanted to make him tougher and better able to handle the demands of being explosive at his size.

“We focused on body composition, maintaining and improving flexibility, strength and power. Also his overall fitness, the weight he carries and the stress that puts on his body.

“We focused on basketball-specific aerobic and anaerobic conditioning.

“One of the main goals was to get Zion back to the level of athletic ability he had before the injury. During the process he has improved athletically, I really think he’s a better athlete now than he was before.

“Once you all see him on the court, I think you’ll agree.”
