The transformation of Huddersfield’s New Street is 80% complete, bringing the Huddersfield Blueprint one step closer.

The street, which became notorious for its three massive planters earlier in the year, is set to be fully revamped by next Spring if the weather allows, according to Kirklees Council. Work will end for the year on December 21 and recommence in the new year.

Through the scheme, more space will be created for people to eat and socialise outdoors and greenery has been added to the area, turning it into a ‘garden street’. The council hopes that the works will attract more footfall and improve trade for local businesses.

New planters, trees and lighting have already been brought in. In addition, the space will benefit from extra security with a new CCTV system designed to combat the area’s anti-social behaviour being introduced, along with new street lighting.

Once all of the works are complete, a poem by Poet Laureate Simon Armitage will be embossed into the street.

The New Street plans make up part of the council’s wider £250m Huddersfield Blueprint, with other elements of the plan also making progress. The temporary Art Gallery at Princess Alexandra Walk recently left its premises in preparation for construction on the Cultural Heart next year – the £210m component of the Blueprint.

Construction of a food hall in the former Queensgate Market building will begin early next year, as will the creation of a new glass-fronted library. At the same time, a public square will be built for holding cultural events.

Following this, the second phase of the Cultural Heart will begin in 2026 to create an urban park, museum and gallery and mixed-use Queen Street development, as well as a live-entertainment venue and 350-space car park.
