Sheffield locals have spoken about its trees a lot over the years, but none are quite as iconic as Graves Park’s ‘lone tree.’
Sadly, it’s a sight people will no longer be able to capture in photos as they wander through the historic park, after the Sycamore Tree was uprooted by Storm Elin over the weekend.
The tree, which is thought to be around 150 years old, was one of several to fall down across Sheffield as the city was battered by heavy rain and strong winds during Storm Elin on Saturday evening (December 9).

And the uprooting of the landmark has seen an outpouring of tributes from devastated residents.

One resident wrote on X: “Sad to see one of the most iconic trees in Graves Park in Sheffield felled by the storm. We’ve loved this tree for decades” and another said “Goodbye to an old friend.”
Lyn wrote on Facebook: “I’m heartbroken – it was our picnic tree in the 70’s and 80’s. I’d take our 3 children with bikes, scooters and potted meat sandwiches when my husband was working on the weekend.
“Just walking past it brought back so many memories. Perhaps a funding page will be started to replace it – I’m sure it has a special place in so many hearts.”
A Facebook page has also been set up for people to pay tribute to and share their most loved photos of the iconic monument.
Sheffield Parks and Countryside said that they ‘are looking for ways’ to create a lasting legacy for the iconic tree’, as some have suggested that the wood from the fallen Sycamore be used to make a bench in its memory.
Storm Elin caused widespread disruption, including road closures, train cancellations and delays and minor flooding.
Flood warnings and alerts remain in place across Yorkshire after Storm Fergus has caused disruption to rail travel, road closures and flooding in the county.
