German-Jewish Comedy The Zweiflers Wins Canneseries

The Zweiflers, a German comedy about a dysfunctional Jewish family battling over the fate of their delicatessen empire has won the top prize for best series as this year’s Canneseries festival.

Created by David Hadda, The Zweiflers stars Mike Burstyn as Symcha Zweifler, the patriarch who finds his plans to sell off the family business made more difficult when details emerge of his shady past in Frankfurt’s red light district. Further complicating matters is his colorful, dysfunctional family, particularly grandson Samuel (Aaron Altaras) and his girlfriend Saba (Saffron Coomber) who are expecting a son, a fourth-generation Zweifler. The Zweiflers also won the Canneseries prize for best music.

The show had its world premiere at Canneseries. Produced by Turbokultur, it will go out in Germany on public broadcaster ARD and is being sold worldwide by ZDF Studios.

The Canneseries jury, led by The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl, gave the Norwegian show Dumbsday, a post-apocalyptic comedy about a virus that attacks human intelligence, the best screenplay prize and honored Spanish actress Aina Clotet with the best performance award for her leading turn in the Catalan dramedy This is Not Sweden. The cast of Operation Sabre, a Serbian historical drama about the 2003 assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, won a special interpretation award.

In the documentary section, the best series honor went to Arte’s Dj Mehdi: Made in France, about the pioneering French hip-hop artist. Rather Burn, a 5 x 8-minute series from Argentina about a group of young people who receive an urn with the remains of their common friend along with an unusual to-do list, took the Canneseries prize for best short-form series.
