Career

After beginning his professional career in a Yorkshire locker room dominated by great characters, Illingworth grew in stature as a fixture of the dominant White Rose team that swept seven county championships in nine years between 1959 and 1968.

England called him too, 30 times over a decade, but it wasn’t until he moved to Leicestershire in 1969 that he really found his calling.

Installed immediately as captain at Grace Road, he was called up to lead his country when injury struck Colin Cowdrey.

Initially as a substitute, he held the position for more than four years, winning 12 and losing only five of his 31 tests.

Illingworth made a remarkable return to Yorkshire colors at the age of 50.

Originally appointed as team manager, he returned to the player roster and ended up with a John Player League winner’s medal.

That would have been a fitting ending if he hadn’t been tempted once again into the limelight as England’s new team chairman in 1994.

His stage as coach was marred by clashes with captain Michael Atherton

In his home life, he was a doting husband to childhood sweetheart Shirley, father to Diane and Vicky, and later grandfather and great-grandfather.

Illingworth played 61 Tests for England between 1958 and 1973, scoring 1,836 test runs at an average of 23.24 and claimed 122 wickets at 31.20.

He captained England 31 times, winning 12 of those matches.

The highlight of his career in England was Ashes’ away success against Bill Lawry’s Australia in 1970/71.

Born in one of Yorkshire’s cricket hotbeds, Pudsey, on June 8, 1932, Illingworth was seven when he took hold of World War II.

His father worked as a carpenter and cabinetmaker, stopping only to help out at a munitions factory during the conflict, and despite learning the family trade, Illingworth soon found his strength.

On the school team at 13, rising through the ranks at Farsley shortly after and selected by the Yorkshire Colts shortly after his 17th birthday, his path was clear.

A tour of national service with the RAF turned out to be little more than a minor detour and his best memory from that time came from representing the Combined Services on the field of play.
