Charley Webb is set for her biggest role since leaving Emmerdale when she appears in new ITV drama The Long Shadow.

The seven-part series follows the impact of The Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe’s shocking crimes. Sutcliffe was convicted of murdering 13 women between 1975 and 1980 in Yorkshire.

Sutcliffe also attempted to murder another seven during that period. Sutcliffe carried out his shocking acts of violence across Yorkshire. He died in prison in 2020 aged 74.

On Monday, September 25, ITV will broadcast the first episode of their new series. The Long Shadow focuses on the lives of his innocent victims and their families.

It features an ensemble cast including Katherine Kelly, David Morrissey, Toby Jones and Daniel Mays. In the first episode, viewers will see a nod to Emmerdale. Charley Webb, 35, familiar to millions as Emmerdale’s Debbie Dingle, features in four of the episodes.

Charley confirmed in 2022 she’d left Emmerdale for good after appearing in the soap since 2002. In recent times, we’ve seen her in BBC’s Better and she’s currently on-tour in production Quiz.

Undoubtedly, The Long Shadow is her biggest TV part since Emmerdale. In the series, she plays WPC Anna Lawson and we saw her filming in Leeds last year. Viewers will first see Charley appear in the second episode of The Long Shadow.

Elsewhere, the new ITV drama makes a nod to Emmerdale in its first episode. The character played by Toby Jones, DCS Dennis Hoban, is shown eating his dinner with his wife when he is called out to a crime scene. As he prepares to leave, his wife states: “But you’ll miss Emmerdale Farm.”

There’s then a brief clip of classic Emmerdale which was called Emmerdale Farm back in the 1970s. As we’ve previously reported, the team behind The Long Shadow have stated they worked hard to contextualise the feeling of Yorkshire at the time.

You can watch episode one of The Long Shadow on ITVX and ITV1 on from Monday, September 25
