Jesse Spencer is among the actors set to return to “Chicago Fire” for its season finale. However, his appearance does not indicate a complete comeback but only a stint to commit to his character.

In 2021, Jesse Spencer announced his exit on NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” where he played Matthew Casey for nearly a decade. The showrunners had to write his character off following his decision, leaving his story with a three-year commitment to live in Oregon.

Before his departure, Spencer agreed to stay until the 200th episode, which was interestingly titled “Two Hundred.” It was also a bittersweet moment for executive producer Derek Haas, who had to bid his beloved friend and colleague goodbye.

WHY SPENCER LEFT “CHICAGO FIRE”

During an interview, the actor shared his realization of being in the industry for 18 years and that it was time to slow down to take care of his family. He said:

“I hate to leave the show because I do love this show, but when the time comes, the time comes.”

Fortunately, Haas did not kill his character, leaving the possibility for Casey to return in the future. Less than a year following his departure, Spencer is set to return for the show’s season ten finale.

SPENCER’S RETURN ON THE THE SHOW

Spencer will reprise his role on the NBC drama but won’t return to be a regular. According to Haas, they “begged him, pleaded, and offered him the moon” so he would make an appearance.

Haas revealed that Raymund had shifted her career into acting, which has kept her busy.

However, Spencer was committed to doing the episode before Haas got to that point. “The character pledged he would be best man at Severide’s wedding,” Haas said. “We’re so grateful to [Spencer] that he would come back and honor that pledge.”

KARA KILLMER’S POSSIBLE RETURN

Of course, Casey would need a date for the wedding, so fans can expect to see the character Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), who has also been absent from the past few episodes.

Killmer plays the on-screen lover of Spencer, who will have to figure out how to maintain their relationship moving forward. Andrea Newman, the show’s co-runner, said that Casey’s return came at a “critical time” in his relationship.

She revealed that fans will “see a Casey who is in a very happy and content place in terms of [his] life [in Oregon], and the big question mark is his relationship with Brett.”

While fans seem to be excited about returning their favorite stars, “Chicago Fire’s” original, Monica Raymund, won’t be one of those reprising her roles.

Haas revealed that Raymund had shifted her career into acting, which has kept her busy. “Andrea and I convinced her to come back a few times,” he said. “But I don’t think she’s going to come back anytime soon.”

Aside from Raymund, another cast member who was dismissed from the show is Charlie Barnett, who brought life to paramedic Peter Mills. Barnett’s character had to be written off to keep the storyline interesting, leaving the actor no choice but to leave.

Although it was a sad and painful experience, Barnett found the silver lining when he was given starring roles in “Tales of the City,” “You,” and “Russian Doll.” He also became a regular in “Arrow” during its final season.
