A violent man is now behind bars for over a decade after raping a Sheffield woman in her own home and threatening to decapitate her if she told the police what he did to her.

Jerome Macalla, 33, overpowered his victim and forced his way into her home before locking the door, keeping the key and subjecting her to a vile sexual attack. The woman was left crying and put a pillow over her face as Macalla, of Arden Road, Birmingham, raped her before leaving the address.

Macalla went on to make terrifying threats to his victim as he told he would “shoot her in the face” and “make her life a misery” if she reported his crimes to police. He also said he would “take her head off” if any police officers came to arrest him.

His victim was so scared, she had to flee to a friend’s house due to the severity of Macalla’s threats, and officers arrested him on 17 June 2023 when he was found with a shovel attempting to break into her home.

PC Katie Walker, who was the officer in charge of the case, said: “Macalla’s threats were so menacing and chilling, his victim was left frightened of reporting the rape to us. She must have been absolutely terrified of this evil man and I want to commend her bravery and courage in coming forward to tell us all the crimes he had subjected her to.”

After being arrested last year, Macalla was brought into custody and later charged with rape, harassment, criminal damage, sending threatening messages, possession of the Class B drug cannabis and driving while disqualified.

He admitted driving while disqualified, criminal damage and possession of cannabis but denied raping and harassing his victim. However, a trial at Sheffield Crown Court saw Macalla found guilty by a jury of the last two offences. Earlier today (31 January), Macalla was jailed for a total of 12 years.

PC Walker said: “Macalla is a dangerous predator who inflicted untold misery on his victim who must have been so scared of what he would do should his crimes ever come to light. Without her testament and courage, there is a good chance this criminal would still be out on our streets and I want to again thank the victim for coming forward and opening up to tell us about how Macalla had raped and harassed her.

“I hope this sentence sends out a zero-tolerance messages to violent individuals like Macalla and I hope it gives the victim some comfort so that she can attempt to move forward with her life.”

Macalla has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and made subject to an indefinite restraining order against the victim. Victims of sexual offences are provided lifelong anonymity by law. It is a criminal offence to name victims or share any information which may lead to them being identified.
