Alessa once stated in a video for Billabong that how she grew up taught her humility and has made her appreciate all the good things that have come her way.

Her upbringing was difficult because her parents worked tirelessly to support their family. However, having grown up in the West side, she is proud of her home and would do anything to represent her people.
