The Met Office has given an exact date when it expects snow to hit parts of the UK. Reports have been growing that serious cold weather is going to hit with -6C and several centimetres of snow coming.

However the Met Office has said that snow could be coming – but it is not predicting it to be widespread. The forecaster did say that there could be a couple of centimetres in some places.

The cold weather is set to hit at the end of the week – on Friday and Saturday – but it is most likely to be confined to Scotland and the north east of England. A Met Office forecaster said: “Our current forecast is for a colder spell of weather across Scotland and parts of NE England at the end of the week (mainly Friday and Saturday).

“This brings the potential for wintry showers in these areas, most likely along North Sea coasts. Some snow is therefore possible, this being most likely over the high ground of northeast Scotland where a centimetre or two is possible. Amounts at lower levels are likely to be very little and due to the ground temperature unlike to lie for long.

“There is still some uncertainly around the details for the end of the week, concerning some frontal positions and wind directions, but this is currently the most likely scenario. It is typical weather for the time of year an is expected to be limited to only the areas mentioned, where impacts are likely to be very limited also.”

Currently the Met Office longer range forecasts are saying that there will be a north-south split. From Nov 23 – December 2 the Met Office says: “Southern parts of the UK drier than of late with some sunny spells, while northern areas, particularly western Scotland, see more in the way of cloud, rain and wind.

“Within this overall pattern, there may well be incursions of colder air at times, especially across north and northeast UK, with wintry showers and overnight frost. It’s uncertain just when such cold spells will occur and how extensive they will be, and it may be that this happens more than once with periods of milder, wetter weather in between. Towards the second weekend, it’s most likely to become more generally changeable, with a lower chance of more settled conditions persisting across the south.”

The even longer range forecast from Sunday 3 December 3 – 17 says: “The most likely scenario through early December is for a continuation of changeable weather, with spells of rain or showers and strong winds interspersed by short-lived drier, brighter periods, although there is a lower chance of more prolonged settled conditions developing.

“Rainfall amounts are likely to be near or above average, with the heaviest rain likely to be in the northwest at first, perhaps shifting further south towards mid-December. Temperatures will most likely be near or a little above average for the period as a whole, although some colder interludes are possible. As is normal in December, occasional frost and wintry showers are likely at times.”
