Walter received a message just as a plane was ready for takeoff and told the stewardess he needed to get off immediately. Marianne broke the rules to help him get out, but a few days later, she got a call from her boss.

Walter clicked on his seat belt and settled on the plane as the flight attendants finished their jobs. But the familiar sound of a text message reminded him that he had yet to turn off his phone or place it on airplane mode. So, he reached quickly for it, planning to ignore the message until he reached Boston. But it was Mrs. Cornelius, his mother’s caretaker.

“Mr. Parker, you need to come here immediately. I just called an ambulance for Mrs. Parker. It’s bad, sir! Please call me.”

His eyes bulged at the message. His mother had several conditions due to old age – that’s why he always hired someone to care for her. However, Mrs. Cornelius was a calm and practical woman. He knew from her written words that something must be truly wrong.

Walter clicked the call option and placed the phone on his ear, but the repeated dial tone was aggravating. It kept going. There was no answer from her.

“Sir,” a female voice and a tap on his shoulder distracted him from the phone. “You need to put the phone away now. Please, turn it off too. We’ll be ready for takeoff soon.”

His fingers trembled as he shoved the phone back into his jacket pocket. “No, no, no. I can’t put it back. I have to leave this plane right now,” he said, nervous but retaining his cool. “Let me out.”

“Sir, no. The doors are closed now. The plane will be moving as soon as the captains are ready. Please, sit back down,” the stewardess continued, her hands raised in front of him in a stop motion.

“No, ma’am,” he said, turning to her. Despite his rising nerves, Walter only whispered. “My mother is dying. I think. Please, I just got a message. I have to get out. I can’t go to Boston right now. Please, help me.”

“I can’t do that. It’s too late,” she continued.

His eyes wandered to her identification badge. “Wanda? Please, Wanda. Someone watches my mother, and she’s a calm, collected woman. She just sent me an urgent message. I swear, I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t have this gut instinct. If I leave now, I won’t get to my mom alive again,” Walter insisted, his voice still low but desperate.

Wanda stared into his eyes and got closer. “Make a scene,” she whispered, her voice a million times lower.

“What?” he matched her quiet words.

“Make a scene to get off the plane,” Wanda continued, her eyebrows rising knowingly. “It’s the only way.”

So, Walter had no choice but to follow suit. He started yelling, “I’m leaving this plane right now! I won’t fly with a crying child nearby!” He stood from his seat, pretending to push Wanda, and collected his carry-on bag from the overhead bin.

Wanda’s own voice rose. “Sir! Sir! You have to sit down!” she looked around and saw the confusion of the other passengers. “There’s no crying baby here!”

“I hear it! I CAN’T DEAL WITH CRAZY PARENTS ANYMORE! Bringing a newborn on a plane is just crazy! LET ME OUT RIGHT NOW!” Walter continued, and his screams only got louder, showing more of his desperation.

Finally, Wanda’s colleagues got involved, and the preparations for takeoff were halted. Someone called security, and Walter was escorted from the plane swiftly. But Wanda discreetly sent a message to the security guard, who had been her friend forever.

So, instead of getting into trouble, Walter was let go outside, where he ran to the parking lot and drove like a bat out of hell to see his mother.

“That man from the other day was insane, right?” another flight attendant, Cynthia, laughed when they ended their shift. “I’ve seen all the viral videos of people complaining on flights, but I never thought we would face that.”

“I know,” Wanda fake-laughed with her. It had been a couple of days since she broke the rules to let the man out, and she still had no idea why she did it. But a man worried about his dying mother deserved to be heard.

“There wasn’t even a crying baby on that plane!” Cynthia continued her merriment. “I’m sad I haven’t seen it online.”

“It was all so quick. I think everyone had turned off their phones already,” Wanda commented and jumped a bit because her phone started ringing unexpectedly. “Oh, it’s Mr. Williams.”

“Oh,” Cynthia said quietly, her mouth remaining in that position. Getting a call from the cabin service director was never a good thing.

Wanda listened to Mr. Williams carefully, who wanted to meet her at their base, a room at the airport for their airline. Wanda swallowed when she finished the call and looked at Cynthia. “I better go see what he wants. Don’t wait for me. I know you wanted to get home early,” she told her friend and walked briskly away, rolling her usual bag.

Inside the base, Mr. Williams waited with… the man from the other day. “Hello, there, Wanda,” he stood up, grinning widely.

“Oh, hello, sir,” Wanda said nervously. “Is everything alright? Your mother?”

“Well, sadly, my mother passed on,” Walter stated. “But I got to say goodbye. It meant the world to me and wouldn’t have happened without your help. So, I called the airline, and they pointed me to Mr. Williams here so that I could express my gratitude in person.”

“I’m sorry for your loss, but I’m glad you got what you wanted,” Wanda said, feeling bittersweet. “But you didn’t have to. I did what I could. It’s my job.”

“Not really,” Walter tilted his head. “So, this is for you.” He gave her an envelope and his card.

“What is this?”

“A little something,” he answered. “And my card. If you ever need a new job, call me.”

Walter thanked her again, shook hands with Mr. Williams, and left. Wanda and her boss were alone now.

“Mr. Williams, I don’t know if he said anything about what I did. But I’m sorry, he was…” Wanda began, but her boss lifted his hand.

“He told me,” Mr. Williams said, sitting back on his office chair. “Normally, you would get a warning or worse. But Mr. Carter is the right person to help Wanda. His family comes from old money in this town.”

“I didn’t know,” she said, frowning. That knowledge wouldn’t have made a difference.

“Well, it doesn’t matter,” Mr. Williams shrugged. “Go home. See you tomorrow.”

“Alright. Thanks,” Wanda said and walked outside. It wasn’t until she arrived home that she looked at the envelope. Her eyebrows almost reached her hairline. There was a cheque…and it was definitely more than “a little something.”
