Yorkshire is being warned to “prepare” for flooding and heavy rain today as Storm Fergus is set to sweep across the region.

The storm is the second one to be named this weekend and is forecast to bring widespread downpours and gusty winds as it moves eastward across the country this evening.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain covering much of Yorkshire from 5pm today until 3am on Monday and has said to expect some flooding and disruption to transport. The alert covers North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, including Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and Huddersfield.

The national forecaster said to expect a brief lull in the wet conditions following the morning rain, but heavy showers will develop later this evening with some areas expected to see up to 40mm of rainfall.

The warnings highlight potential for travel disruption and possible flooding for homes and businesses, with people urged to consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit if their property is at risk.

The Met Office said: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

“Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

The bad weather is likely to cause delays on the roads, railways, at airports and ferry transport, while coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities may be affected by spray and large waves, the forecaster added.

Northern rail has warned that several train services are facing “severe disruption” across Yorkshire today due to the heavy rain and flooding on Saturday, with many being cancelled.

It comes after Storm Elin brought strong winds and heavy downpours to the region on Saturday, prompting the Environment Agency to issue a string of flooding warnings. In Yorkshire, there are currently 10 flood warnings in place and 40 flood alerts for Sunday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page added: “Storm Fergus will conclude what has been an unsettled weekend of weather for the UK. Fergus will bring some strong winds and heavy rain for a time late on Sunday and into the early hours of Monday morning.

“While the strongest gusts are expected in the Republic of Ireland, Storm Fergus will bring some windy conditions to western areas, including Irish Sea coasts, while also bringing some potentially impactful rain.

“The rain has potential to be disruptive in parts of northern England and parts of Scotland, especially where it’s falling on very saturated ground.”
