Houston Astros pitcher Framber Valdez threw a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and allowed just one run over 6.1 innings to help the home team beat the the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday at Minute Maid Park in Game 2 of the MLB World Series.
Astros scored three runs in the first inning off starter Zack Wheeler, who was able to rally after a very difficult start, but Phillies were unable to complete a comeback like they did in Game 1.
Wheeler pitched five innings, allowing six hits, five runs, one home run, three strikeouts and three walks.
Alex Bregman chipped in with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to put Houston back up by five runs, only this time, Philadelphia responded with two runs.
The first came on a sacrifice fly by Jean Segura in the seventh and another on a fielding error by Yordan Alvarez, who closed his glove before getting the ball and allowed Alec Bohm to score.
Phillies nearly complete comeback
In the bottom of the eighth, Kyle Schwarber connected on a deep drive all the way through right field and as it reached the stands, it was slightly fouled open.
Video review helped umpires correct their original call of a two-run homer.
Schwarber returned to the batter’s box and again connected with power, but right fielder Ryan Tucker caught the ball a few inches over the fence.
Game 3 of the 2022 MLB World Series will be Monday in Philadelphia, the first of three straight at home for the Phillies.
