The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a six-year, $140 million deal with infielder Trevor Story, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Story has an option to opt out after his fourth season, Feinsand said, but that would be negated if the team exercises an option for a seventh year. If that happens, the contract would be worth $160 million.

Story was the last big-name player to remain a free agent. In previous days, interest from the Giants of San Francisco was rumored, as well as the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers.

Last season (2021) with the Rockies, he hit 24 homers and drove in 75 runs in 142 games. His best record was in 2018, where he hit .291 with 37 home runs and 108 RBIs.

The Red Sox plan for Story

Multiple media reports suggest Story will be the Red Sox’ regular second baseman and would only move to shortstop if Xander Bogaerts decides to opt out of his contract for the 2023 season in search of a better deal in free agency.

Story is a natural shortstop – in fact, he has played his entire MLB career at that position – however, he is willing to have less defensive demands to take care of his physique and avoid injuries, his biggest problem in recent years.

Story will also be able to be a designated hitter and play shortstop when Bogaerts isn’t available.
