The general manager of Serie A side Monza has called for a new kind of Super League that does not feature English teams.

There is a feeling that the economic superiority of the Premier League sides means that the rest of Europe’s top clubs can’t compete.

The proposal has come from Adriano Galliani, who made the suggestion during an interview with Italian newspaper Tuttosport.

The former vice-president and general manager of AC Milan sees this as a solution to the economic inequality that European teams have, when compared to the monetary superiority of the Premier League clubs.

“[The Super League] could be a solution, but without the English,” he said.

“There should also be a Brexit in football. It would then be a real European championship, without the British.

“The 20 Premier League clubs have a turnover almost four times higher than the 20 clubs in Serie A.”

Galliani and the example of Monza

As an example of this economic inequality, Galliani spoke about his Monza side, which this season will play in Serie A for the first time ever.

Monza get 33 million euros from TV rights, 3m euros of which should go as a donation to Serie B to leave a total of 30m euros,” he said.

“A newly promoted Premier League club earns 160m euros. How can I compete with Nottingham Forest?”

On Monza‘s future in Serie A, the 78-year-old explained that they’re aiming for 10th place in the standings.

“My childhood dream came true, taking Monza to Serie A was more difficult than winning the Champions League with AC Milan,” he said.
