The Phoenix Suns have joined their WNBA mirror team, the Phoenix Mercury, in the at least symbolic fight to return Brittney Griner to the United States after announcing that for the remainder of their playoff appearance, they will use the same decal to support the cause of the star basketball player who is being held in Russia.

The decal will make its debut during Tuesday night’s Game 5 of the Western Conference Semifinals series against the Dallas Mavericks, and if the Suns continue to advance to the Western Conference Finals and eventually the NBA Finals, the decal will be on display at the Footprint Center in Arizona.

Brittney Griner, a symbol of the city of Phoenix

Griner is, in a way, a sports symbol of the city of Phoenix, since she arrived at Mecury for the 2013 season, however, she has not been able to participate in her tenth season with the desert team due to the problem of her arrest last February 17 on drug possession charges after being caught at Sheremetyevo International Airport with a vaporizer cartridges containing hashish oil, which is illegal in Russia.

“BG42” are the letters and number the Suns will display on the aforementioned decal, in addition to the following message.

A few days ago, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert had mentioned about the support for Griner with the following statement.

“We continue to work on bringing Brittney home,” Englebert said, “and are appreciative of the support the community has shown BG and her family during this extraordinarily challenging time.”
