Iran is currently looking to get the USMNT expelled from the World Cup in Qatar after a social media post from the USMNT’s official Twitter and Instagram page showed the Iranian flag without the Islamic symbol which is part of the official flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The post has been deleted

The post which has now been deleted, was completely intentional, as said by the United States Soccer Federation, they did that to show “support for the women in Iran fighting for basic human rights.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian government it is outraged as they claim the USMNT “removed the name of God” from its national flag.

“By posting a distorted image of the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran on its official account, the U.S. football team breached the FIFA charter, for which a 10-game suspension is an appropriate penalty,” said the Tasnim News Agency back in Iran through their social media “Team USA should be kicked out of World Cup 2022.”

USMNT is looking for a peaceful match

Meanwhile, the USMNT replaced the original posting and presented the flag as is, and to the claim, they retorted, “We look forward to a peaceful and competitive match on the field. The United States continues to find ways to support the Iranian people in the face of state-sponsored violence against women and a brutal crackdown against peaceful protestors,”

Protests in Iran

The demonstrations began in Iran back in September after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old activist who was arrested by the Iranian Morality Police. This sparked huge unrest which has been faced with violence by the Iranian authorities, according to Human Rights activists, there have been mass killings (450) and mass incarceration and arrests, about 18,000 so far.
