While Canelo Alvarez‘s immediate focus will be on recovering from surgery on his left hand, the Mexican boxer is already considering his options when it comes to his next fight.

The 32-year-old retained his undisputed 168-pound title after defeating Gennady Golovkin on Saturday, and with his hand injury set to sideline him for the rest of the year, he’s already focused on next year’s challenges.

One of them could be the big rematch with Dmitry Bivol, provided the Russian beats his mandatory challenger Gilberto Ramirez. Should the Mexican defeat Bivol, you can rule out a fight with Canelo as he refuses to fight his compatriots.

After Bivol, The Mirror suggests there are four other options for Alvarez. The first is David Benavidez, who has racked up 26 wins without defeat. The American-born star would be Alvarez’s stiffest test at 168 pounds.

However, Canelo has already stated he isn’t interested in the fight.

“Why do you think I don’t want to a fight a Mexican or Benavidez,” he said. “I hear his father talk a lot of shit, but let’s see, look at what he has achieved, nothing.”

Another possible opponent would be Jermall Charlo, who has a record of 32 wins and no defeats. The American star is a star as the WBC 160-pound champion, but said he is willing to move up a weight class if offered the opportunity.

The fourth option would be Artur Beterbiev. The Russian, who is the reigning 175-pound champion, holds the IBF, WBC and WBO titles in the division, and has shown supreme talent during his undefeated run.

Finally, there is Oleksandr Usyk, which would be the biggest challenge for the Mexican given the difference in weight. Although Canelo said he would be willing to face the heavyweight champion, Usyk’s focus is likely on fighting Deontay Wilder or the winner of Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua.

There are no shortage of options for Alvarez, who will take a few months to consider his next fight after defeating Golovkin.
