With Portugal‘s defeat to Morocco on Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo‘s World Cup dream was ended.

In what is surely his last appearance at this tournament, the No.7 went out and did so as a substitute coming off the bench, having been dropped by Fernando Santos.

That was the latest blow for the forward in what has been a very tough year, something Ronaldo‘s friend Piers Morgan tweeted about afterwards.

“Very sad to see Cristiano Ronaldo in tears as his dream of winning the World Cup ended,” Morgan tweeted.

“Those mocking him should remember what he’s done for football.

“For me, he’s the GOAT and a great guy who’s had the toughest year of his life on and off the pitch. He’s earned our respect.”

Cristiano Ronaldo’s difficult 2022

There are various reasons why this has been a tough year for the Portuguese and for his family.

On the sporting front, Cristiano Ronaldo has experienced the most difficult period of his career.

Manchester United finished outside of the Champions League positions in 2021/22 and then Ronaldo couldn’t find a Champions League club to move to.

He had to stay at Old Trafford, but was no longer a starter and then left the team following his controversial interview with Morgan.

On a personal level, he unfortunately lost one of his children due to complications during the birth.

That was a tough moment for him and Georgina Rodriguez, who announced in April that they’d lost the baby.
