The International Boxing Federation (IBF) super featherweight championship changed hands. Joe Cordina (15-0, 9 KOs) did his thing at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, and took the belt after defeating Japanese Kenichi Ogawa (26-2-1, 18 KOs), a fight that ended much faster than expected.
It was only in the second round when Cordina, who was apparently down on the scorecards after the first round, threw a powerful right jab, the punch landed squarely on the Asian boxer’s chin and sent him straight to the canvas.
Kenichi Ogawa had unprotected his guard and it took its toll, because he tried to get up when the count of protection began, but failed to do so, so Michael Alexander, third on the surface decided to end the fight.
Cordina remains undefeated
The public that was present in the building gave their support to the Welsh fighter, who did not have to prolong the fight to wear down his rival, with the brutal blow that he connected in time was enough to secure his fifteenth victory, nine of them by chloroform.
Cordina is a fighter used to being a local fighter, only one of his victories came outside the United Kingdom, that victory came against Mario Enrique Tinoco at the Monte Carlo Casino.
Another epic moment in the 30-year-old fighter’s career came when he took away Miko Khatcharyan’s undefeated record, a fight in which it was necessary to go to the scorecards to get a winner.
