Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko was not pleased that Sergio Perez gave up a podium spot in Formula 1‘s French Grand Prix which took place on Sunday at the Paul Ricard circuit.

Perez missed out on third place due to some lack of concentration in the final laps of the race, with the two Mercedes cars making a double podium finish.

Checo was sleeping at the restart,” Marko said in an interview for the German media Suddeutsche Zeitung.

“Maybe he drank tequila yesterday.”

Checo over-braked when the race restarted after the yellow flags and Marko is clear that it was not the fault of the control tower or the team. The only one to blame is Perez who did not react as he should have.

Helmut’s previous remarks on Checo Perez

Ahead of the French Grand Prix, Marko analysed Perez‘s time with the team, pointing out that he started with confidence after his first victory in Sakhir in 2020. Earlier this month, he blamed Perez for his retirement at the Austrian GP.

“We said before the start ‘don’t go around the outside in that corner, it is not possible’,” Marko told Sky Sports Germany.

In addition, Marko was annoyed that neither of his drivers could win at Red Bull‘s home track, with Max Verstapapen coming second and Checo failing to complete the first lap.
