There are several coaches who have already lost their jobs following their countries’ eliminations at the World Cup, such as Tata Martino at Mexico, Roberto Martinez at Belgium and Paulo Bento at South Korea.

Now, Luis Enrique could be the next to leave a vacant post, following Spain‘s disappointing last 16 exit against Morocco, a match they lost on penalties.

His contract as Spain national team coach expires at the end of 2022 and he hasn’t renewed yet, but Luis Enrique has always been able to count on the trust of Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales.

Still, this could be seen as the right time for a change, while it also isn’t even certain if Luis Enrique would want to stay on.

Either way, this is an issue that must be addressed in the coming weeks, as there are matches coming in March.

What did Luis Enrique say about his future?

The coach has already spoken about his future in the press conference after the loss to Morocco.

“I can’t say right now, it’s not the moment to talk about my future,” he said.

“That’s not interesting right now.

“I feel happy with the federation and, if it were up to me, I’d stay forever.

“But, I have to take the best decision for me and for the team.”

The final Spain game for several players

There are some veteran Spain players who may have also played their final matches with the national team, such as Sergio Busquets.

Others, like Jordi Alba or Koke, may also have played their final World Cup, at least.
