Sunday’s London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham really was a heated game of two halves, with Thomas Tuchel‘s side firmly in control in the opening 45 minutes before things descended into chaos after the break.
The spoils were eventually shared after a stoppage-time goal from Harry Kane drew Spurs level for the second time on the day, but most of the attention was on what was happening on the sidelines between Tuchel and Antonio Conte.
Chelsea had as much as 70 percent of the possession at points in the first half, and Tottenham would have been thankful to go in at half time just one goal behind. Kalidou Koulibaly go the only goal of the half, executing a brilliant volley on the end of a Marc Cucurella corner to score his first goal for his new club.
Conte changed things up after the break and the game changed s a result, with Spurs growing into the occasion.
But Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg‘s leveller midway through the half sparked controversy. Kai Havertz felt he had been found beforehand, but nothing was given and the leveller stood, while the Blues also felt that Richarlison was offside and interfering with Edouard Mendy.
Things get heated between Conte and Tuchel
Conte‘s celebrations didn’t go down well with his former club. The Italian celebrated in front of Chelsea‘s bench and Tuchel squared up to him, with the two even bumping chests.
Reece James restored Chelsea‘s lead with less than a quarter of an hour to play, prompting Tuchel to run down the touchline and past the away bench as he celebrated, and things were still simmering between the two.
In the last minute of stoppage time, Spurs levelled again. A corner was delayed as a VAR check was going on, and Chelsea looked to have been distracted. Harry Kane was allowed to get free at the near post and he headed into Mendy‘s bottom corner.
After the final whistle, Tuchel and Conte exchanged words again. Conte seemed to take issue with the way in which Tuchel shook his hand, and chaos unfolded again. Both coaches were shown red cards.
