Fresh from King Charles’s estate at Windsor is this 20-foot-high Nordmann Fir tree.

It’s in St George’s Hall, one of the biggest and most impressive state rooms at Windsor Castle, a palace which has had a royal presence since William the Conqueror.

It’s a special time, not only is there a new King but 30 years ago this magnificent hall was almost completely devastated by a fire with other parts of the castle.

Now the royal household is keen to show the building back in all its glory ready for Christmas.

Inspiration behind the decorations

Kathryn Jones is the Senior Curator for the Royal Collection of artworks and historic items in the UK’s palaces.

She says this is just one of the trees to come from the Crown estates at Windsor.

“We have eight trees in total on display here obviously, the highlight being the 20 foot Nordmann fir that’s in St George’s Hall, which is covered in 3,000 Christmas tree lights and then decorated. And this year, we’ve chosen a purple theme in there,” says Jones.

The decorations this year are in royal purple, but the staff haven’t said whether it’s because they’re expecting the monarch.

Before the pandemic, the family would spend Christmas’s at Queen Elizabeth’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk and it’s believed the new King may return to that tradition.
