The 2022 season for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has been disappointing to say the least: with low productivity, issues with teammates, and injuries galore for the former first overall pick in the 2019 Draft out of Texas A&M.

However, the most devastating news came on Monday Night Football in Week 14 when the Cardinals hosted the New England Patriots at State Farm Stadium. On Arizona’s third offensive snap, Murray ran out to his right side and when he tried to cut for more yards, his right knee buckled oddly as his foot did not make the correct traction.

The Cardinal’s initial tests have confirmed the worst prognosis: a torn ACL ligament in his right knee. The QB will now have to have surgery and is in danger of starting the 2023 NFL season in the PUP list.

How did Kyler Murray’s terrible injury happen?

Murray fell to the sideline immediately without being touched by a Pats player and immediately lay motionless as teammates and opponents called for quick medical assistance.

The 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year and two-time Pro Bowl selection was wheeled off the field on a cart as his colleagues wished him well, his place taken by Colt McCoy, who has already had plenty of activity so far this year.

Kyler Murray’s huge contract extension

It should be recalled that last July 21, Murray agreed to a huge contract extension for five years and $230.5 million of which $160 million is guaranteed after a season break where the passer publicly complained about his situation in Arizona.

The controversy came after it was revealed that a clause in the contract included an obligation to have certain study hours outside the franchise’s facilities, which was withdrawn after it was disclosed.
