The winningnest player in NBA history, Bill Russell is set to be honored by all the teams in the league by retiring the No. 6 from all their rosters. Only players who are currently wearing those numbers are allowed to keep wearing them, but a few exceptions could be made in the case of LeBron James‘ history with the Miami Heat. However, the most surprising fact of this decision in which all NBA teams agreed is the Lakers signing up for it.

Given their historic rivalry with the team from Boston, one of the petitions from the Celtics might rub some Lakers fans the wrong way. But the team from Los Angeles and its leadership decided to make one of the most sportsmanship gestures probably in sports history. Regardless of the reactions, Lakers agreed to do something unprecedented.

Bill Russell’s No. 6 at Crypto.com Arena

When the first image was leaked to the public, many Lakers fans were surprised but most of them understood the meaning of this gesture. All NBA teams agreed to put a smal treble with the No. 6 on their court, including the Lakers. In the image, you can clearly see a Boston Celtics‘ symbol inside the Lakers court and it does look a little strange.

But considering everything Russell did on and off the court, most people will understand the legendary status he boasts even after his passing. Fortunately, those Lakers fans who don’t like having a treble inside their court will only have a endure it for a single season. Although, Lakers winning the championship next season with that treble will bring a lot of bullying coming their way.

Considering the long-lived rivalry between the Lakers and the Celtics, perhaps the oldest purple and gold fans are the ones who won’t like this gesture. For many years, they suffered at the hands of Bill Russell and lost numerous finals against him. But from a sportsmanship standpoint, those who endure this year with that clover-shaped logo will learn with true respect really means. Those who don’t, are completely entitled to their opinion.
