March Madness continued on Thursday with the Sweet 16’s first four games between the West and the South Conferences. There is a major surprise that almost nobody was expecting with a massive upset in the West and another one in the South. This MArch Madness extravaganza is the gift that keeps on giving and we are only past the first of two wild days of activity. It’s time to take a look at the most important moments from Thursday’s action and get a glimpse into what we can expect for the Elite Eight. Friday promises to be just as exciting as Thursday but Thursday was already quite incredible if you ask anybody.
West Bracket
The two games in the West were already impressive as Arkansas (4) faced the apparently invincible Gonzaga (1). On the other side, Texas Tech (3) had a much more balanced game against Duke (2). With only a few seconds left on the clock, the Hogs recovered a ball that effectively gave them the chance to eliminate Gonzaga with a final score of 74-68. Williams was the standout performer of the evening. Duke was led by an outstanding Paolo Banchero, who scored 22 points against Texas Tech and handed Coach K his historic 100th MArch Madness victory. Quite an impressive milestone for such a historic coach. For the Elite Eight, Duke is facing Arkansas up next to decide who goes to the Final Four.
South Bracket
The South also gave us some incredible moments to enjoy in the Sweet 16. The first major upset of this bracket came early as Arizona (1) lost to Houston (5). In fact, the Cougars pulled off an unexpected 72-60 upset with an absolutely unplayable defense from start to finish. On the other side of the bracket, Vilanova (2) continued down their path to the final stages of this March Madness adventure. They defeated Michigan (11) with a tight 63-55 result that was decided in the final minutes of the game. For the Elite Eight, Vilanova is facing Houston in an exciting match-up between both teams.
