The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was harshly criticized after the most recent episode of her podcast ‘Archetypes’, because according to her listeners she tried a ‘really pathetic’ British accent along with actress Jameela Jamil, 36, who is British.
Markle, who is American, has been under constant siege from social media followers and press from different parts of the world, especially after Queen Elizabeth II died and both she and her husband, Prince Harry, returned to live in the United States with their young children.
Meghan is not forgiven for anything
The conversation started like this: “You alright, babe? Hello?”, Jamil asked, to which Meghan appeared to reply, “Ello. Hello, my friend. How are you doing?”. The “Ello” comes as Jamil offers her greeting, though it could be an editing snafu. According to a transcript of the episode, Jamil is quoted as saying “ello” and laughing after, with Markle replying, “Hello, my friend. How are you doing?”
But that’s not enough to ward off criticism on social media and in the press. “Now she’s making fun of the British accent? Please, Meghan, shut up,” tweeted one person. “Really pathetic,” expressed another. “Is Meghan trying to do a British accent again?”, asked a third.
Her accent has been criticized for years
Although she doesn’t usually do it, Markle occasionally tries to speak with a British accent, but every time she does she is heavily criticized. In 2018 a fan caught a speech she gave where she sounded different.
“On Twitter it’s a big argument,” a CNN reporter said at the time. “Strictly speaking, for someone in Britain, it’s still not British. He isn’t. But it’s on its way. I think he’s obviously slowing down his language, enunciating more, as royals try to do to get people to understand them.”
At least on the podcast episode, her guest defended her: “It’s an unfathomable amount of shit you take, Meghan. I can’t believe it,” she said.
“And I defended myself on your behalf for years before I met you because I was so outraged by the misrepresentation of this very normal, very kind, very civil woman. That demonization just shows how afraid they are of you.”
