News of the death of Bill Russell stopped the NBA world on Sunday, with multiple former and active players remembering the Boston Celtics legend with some words on Twitter.

Russell, 88, reportedly passed away peacefully in his home with his wife next to him.

Although he reportedly had no previous health condition, Russell was taken to the hospital Friday night for dehydration, according to TMZ.

Besides former and active NBA players like Magic Johnson extending his condolences, actors such as Samuel L. Jackson also expressed their grief.

He had The Greatest Laugh. He was Uncompromising. He was A Champion,” Jackson wrote. “He was Smart. He was A Light. He was My Friend & I Love Him… RIP Mr Bill.”

NBA Twitter reacts to Bill Russell death

Earvin “Magic” Johnson took to Twitter to send his and his wife Cookie’s prayers to the Russell family.

“This is a tremendous loss for the entire basketball world,” Johnson wrote. “Cookie and I are praying for the Bill’s family and loved ones, our NBA family, and the entire basketball community.”

Celtics forward Grant Williams thanked Russell for paving the way for Black men to play in the NBA.

“R.I.P Bill Russell. You allowed me to be in the position I am in today and you changed not only the league but the world. Forever 6,” Williams wrote.

Jayson Tatum shared a photo of Russell on Twitter, thanking him for everything he did for basketball and the Black community.

“Thank you for everything! R.I.P Legend,” Tatum wrote.

Former NBA head coach George Karl shared a picture of Russell playing against Wilt Chamberlain, saying they’re having an ‘epic reunion.’

Skip Bayless also took the time to share his thoughts on Russell, saying no other athlete has spoken out about race more than the legendary Celtics superstar.

“RIP Mr. Russell, true legend. No black superstar has ever spoken out more courageously and powerfully about race,” Bayless wrote. “11 championships. 5 MVPs. A one and only. His wisdom and his laugh will be missed.”

Michael Jordan also reacted to the news of Russell’s death.
