Baker Mayfield can’t catch a break this year. On Friday, the University of Oklahoma unveiled the statue of its Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Twitter had a field day trolling Mayfield for the statue’s lack of resemblance to the Cleveland Browns quarterback.
The University of Oklahoma puts up a statue of all its Heisman Trophy winners, including Mayfield, Sam Bradford, Steve Owens, Billy Sims, Billy Vessels and Jason White. Kyler Murray will also get a statue in Oklahoma, which will be unveiled sometime next year.
For Murray’s sake, hopefully Oklahoma learns from this year’s blunder and gives him a proper statue that actually looks like him. Mayfield joins Cristiano Ronaldo as an athlete whose statue was not what fans expected.
Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy winners reunite
The statue unveiling ceremony was also an excuse to get all seven of Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy winners in one room. Despite Mayfield looking happy as ever during the ceremony, the news of his statue’s ‘funky’ look is what made headlines.
While some Twitter users compared the statue’s likeness to various actors, one hilariously pointed out that it looked like Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder ‘trying to keep people away from his cocaine.’ Others simply focused on the fact that it’s in a running back pose even though Mayfield is a quarterback.
Some other comments included people saying the statue should have had a helmet on to avoid this issue and that their attempt at adding a headband was just awful. Whatever the case may be for why Mayfield’s statue looks nothing like him, it at least paved way for the awesome tweets.
