Sergio Perez took the first pole position of his career by pipping Charles Leclerc to first place by 0.025 seconds at the 2022 Saudi Arabian GP.

Ferrari were on course for a front row lockout until Perez went to the top of the timing sheets, to beat Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

Max Verstappen could only manage fourth, as he struggled with the tyres in Q3 and will start ahead of Esteban Ocon, George Russell and Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton knocked out in Q1

The other major story from qualifying was Lewis Hamilton‘s elimination from Q1. It was the first time the seven-time world champion failed to reach Q2 since the 2017 Brazilian GP, after he struggled to get to grips with his Mercedes. He will start from 16th on Sunday.

There was an hour-long stoppage in the second part of qualifying after Mick Schumacher crashed at high speed in his Haas. Schumacher was taken to the medical centre for checks.
